I'm trying to use VMWare in a fairly simple routing lab, but having some difficulty figuring a good way of configuring the adapters. My lab is a simple EIGRP lab that I know works as I can ping all interfaces from each other, but when I connect my VMWare instances, I can only ping the local router. Does anyone have some ideas on dealing wit VMWare? IN VmWare, I'm using Damn Small Linus as the Guest OS with each network interface being set to Vmnet1, Vmnet2, etc. Using internal DHCP Server in VMWare.

Any thoughts?

Robert

I am also working on VmWare and I am glad to get you so that we can share our views. But I still did not get that why are getting only ping? How can that be possible? Let me check with your process and sort it out, I will let you know.

Thanks for your reply. For whatever reason I was able to ping the local routers, but that was it. After while of poking around in my VMWare machines, I realized it was because VMWare's DHCP Server was not and does not assign a gateway address. After I added a default route to each one it work fine.

FYI, to save on disk space I have 5 VM's configured all booting off an single ISO (*Damn Small Linux) with a 1 gig virtual hd, 300mb ram on each. Each VM is assigned to a seperate VMNet interface. All which I had pre-configured in VMWare Server Network Editor.

If you have any questions feel free to shoot me an email

btw, if you are using a loopback interface "Cloud" to connect to your real network interface you may need to disable your local connections as I have seen the default route try and still go out your active Internet connection.

Hi Gents!!

I am facing very similar problem, Its a simple toplogy with two routers.
R1---R2----VMWare-XP
I can ping from
XP to R2
R2 to XP
But can not ping from
R1 to XP
XP to R1

I grabbed a packet sniffer which shows the ping request but no reply received. I have disabled firewall on XP, Allowed incoming ICMP messages. But no luck. Something is block my ping replys but I cant figure out what?
I have also disabled all connections on my PC. Can someone please suggest a solution?
I can post the topology/config if required.... This is driving me nutts Sad
Any help, sugguestion would be much appricated.

Check the routing table on your XP,

you have to add an explicit route to R2 on your XP.

Sorry, I mean to say R1 (not R2) in my reply...
